When any of us think about retro-video-gaming, there are many games that come to mind, but one that really stands out is of course; Pac-Man.
Oh yes, the old farts in society who were around during 1980, the year that this timeless classic of a video game came out, probably had no idea of much of an impact the game would make on the world, the quick and massive successof the game istelf came as a shock, especially when you take into consideration the fact that Pac-Man was released during the golden age of video aracde games, around the same time other games, such as games from what was at the time, the most popular genre for video games: space shooters, like Space Invaders and Asteroids.
The game was put onto the good old arcade machines that many games during this time found their way towards, and what made Pac-Man successful was that it had created a new genre in video games, and since it’s release in 1980, it has been credited very often as a landmark in the history of video gaming and is one of the most recognizable video games of all time. Pac-Man is also one of the highest grossing video games of all time as it had generated a very hefty sum of $2.5 Billion by the time we had reached the 1990s. $2.5 Billion, eh? What us MadSluggers would do with that money…
Pac-Man’s so big, that on the 5th June, 2007, there was a World Championship for Pac-Man held in New York City! the winner was Carlos Daniel Borrego, from Mexico. A video game getting it’s own World Championship?!?
So it just shows how much of a legacy that Pac-Man holds for itself, maybe us MadSluggers will have one of our games get that type of legacy? We can continue to dream on…
